Tips for protecting your mouth and your baby
|
| |
To keep your mouth healthy and avoid problems with your pregnancy and your unborn baby:
- Plan ahead. If you are planning to become pregnant, schedule an appointment with the dentist for a check-up and cleaning.
- If you find you are pregnant before having a cleaning and checkup, make an appointment during your first trimester.
- Remember to tell the dentist you are pregnant in order to avoid any unnecessary X-rays.
- Snack on low-sugar snacks such as fruits and vegetables; avoid high-carbohydrate snacks which leave behind the sugary residue that causes cavities.
- Brush in the morning, at night, and after meals, with a fluoride toothpaste; pay close attention to the gum line.
- Floss at least once a day.
- Use an anti-plaque rinse.
Eat right.
- Make sure you are getting enough of the nutrients you and your baby need. Your baby’s teeth will be forming between your third and sixth months of pregnancy. Get plenty of calcium-rich foods, as
well as foods with vitamins A, D, C and phosphorous.
